Dermaroller

1. What conditions can be treated?
Some common indications are:
a). A reduction in acne and chicken pox scarring.
b). Helps to tighten the skin and restore elasticity to ageing and sun damaged skin.
c). Reduces the appearance of stretch marks.
d). Soften fine lines on the face, hands and décolleté.
e). Thickens the skin to reduce lines and wrinkles.

2. What part of the body can the treatment be performed on?
The treatment can be carried out anywhere on the body, however the usual and most popular areas are the face, neck, décolleté and hands. It is also used on thighs, buttocks, hips and abdomen.

3. What does the procedure involve?
Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and swabbed with a sterile solution. Then a topical local anaesthetic cream will be applied to the area being treated. This is left on for around 45 minutes to take effect. The cream is removed and the needling starts, which can take anything from 10 to 30 minutes depending on the size of the area being treated. The roller is then repeatedly rolled over the skin to produce thousands of micro-medical needle-columns in the skin. Each column will penetrate into the dermis of the skin and will be approximately 0.1mm in width. The column will close rapidly enabling the skin to recover quickly – often in the same day. The treated skin will show micro bleeding and this is the required end point of the treatment.
The skin will be wiped clean and a cocktail of vitamins and hydrating serums or hyaluronic acid suitable for your treatment concerns, may be massaged into the areas during this time, enabling them to go deep into the dermal layers.

4. How do I look after treatment?
Immediately following the treatment you will look red, resembling moderate sunburn. The skin will feel warm and tightness may be felt. These normally reduce within an hour or two and will normally recover within 2 to 3 days depending upon your skin type.

5. Are there special instructions have to follow after treatment?
Use tepid water to cleanse the face for the next 48 hours and pat dry using a clean towel. It is recommended make-up is not applied for 2-3 days. A high factor sunblock is a must to use following treatment. Do not touch the area immediately after treatment. It is not recommend that you participate in high impact exercise after, on the day of treatment.

6. How does it work?
The micro channels cause keratinocytes and fibroblasts to produce numerous growth factors to induce collagen and elastin that generate new skin cells to repair it, and blood supply is enhanced without leaving any damage to the epidermis at all. Over the following weeks the skin becomes thicker, plumper and more youthful.

7. How long does it take to see the results?
This will depend on your cell renewal process, as this slows down as we age. In general it can take up 4 to 8 weeks to see any results; however the regeneration process will continue over the following months giving a gradual enhancement.

8. How many treatments will I need?
This will be dependent on a number of factors including age, area being treated, skin condition and damage. In most cases it is usually a course of either 3 or 6 treatments, generally spaced between 4 and 8 weeks apart. It is recommended a one-off treatment is performed every 6 months to maintain the effects.

9. Are there any side effects?
Medical needling is safe, with minimal side effects or risks with this type of treatment. The skin will red in appearance for a couple of days following medical skin needling treatment, much like moderate sunburn, with some minor bleeding and bruising possible. The area will feel warm, dry or tight for a short while. Other side effects typically include minor flaking or dryness of the skin, with scab formation in many cases. Hyperpigmentation (darkening of certain areas of the skin) can occur very rarely and usually resolves after a month. If you have a history of cold sores or acne, this could possibly flare up after treatment in rare cases.

10. Who should not have a Medical Skin Needling treatment?
Medical skin needling treatment is suitable for most skin types. A full medical history will be taken prior to treatment to determine suitability. However the following are all contra indicated:
a). Have open wounds, cuts or abrasions to the skin.
b). Have had a radiation treatment within the last year.
c). Have a current outbreak of herpes simplex (cold sores) active acne, or any other infection or chronic skin condition in the area to be treated.
d). Have areas of the skin that are numb or lack sensation.
e). Are pregnant or breast feeding.
f). Have a history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing.

11. Does it hurt?
The area will be anesthetized with a topical local anesthetic and therefore should not be painful. However the brow area and the upper lip are slightly more sensitive to treat.
